Invisalign Braces: Questions and Answers

Invisalign Braces: Questions and Answers

Jun 26, 2017

For patients who want the benefits of a beautiful, brilliant smile but are less than thrilled to have to wear metal brackets and wires on their teeth, Invisalign braces may be the perfect solution! Invisalign is the clear alternative to traditional braces. Studies have shown that results with Invisalign are on par with the results you could expect from orthodontic treatment with braces, and many orthodontic patients love the convenience and virtual invisibility of Invisalign. In case you’re still not sure what Invisalign braces are or how they differ from traditional braces, here are some frequently-asked questions (and their answers) to help you decide if Invisalign braces are for you.

How do Invisalign braces work?
Invisalign works to correct your dental alignment by creating a customized set of clear aligners using 3D computer images of your mouth and teeth. Under the treatment plan outlined by your orthodontist, the clear aligners advance to the next one in the series until, little by little, your teeth have moved to their desired positions. Each custom-made aligner is worn for approximately two weeks before advancing to the next one in the series.

How long will I have to wear my Invisalign braces?
The duration of treatment depends on several factors, including the amount of correction needed, but the typical duration of Invisalign treatment is between 9 and 18 months. Your orthodontist can give an estimate of how long your Invisalign treatment will take during your initial consultation.

Does Invisalign correct overbites?
Yes- Invisalign braces work much the same way traditional braces do, and have been shown to correct overbites in the majority of patients.

Can I eat with my Invisalign braces?
Yes! In fact, unlike traditional braces, there are no restrictions to what you can eat, because Invisalign braces can be completely removed during mealtimes.

Do Invisalign braces hurt more or less than traditional braces?
Like traditional braces, there is an initial period of discomfort when you get used to wearing your first aligner, and you may experience slight pain each time you level up to a new aligner. Unlike traditional braces, you don’t have to worry about metal brackets rubbing against your inner lip or wires poking into your gums.
